Drake, WondaGurl, Classified, Organik, Rich Kidd & more pay tribute to Redway on social media

Update: Redway’s untimely passing has now seen coverage from the biggest hip-hop platforms around. BET, The Source, XXL, Hot97, Noisey, Complex, HipHopDX… the list goes on.

Toronto, ON – Originally published August 1, 2015 – International superstar Drake is one of thousands of people who have shown love for Toronto rapper Shane Redway who passed away early Saturday with three other people in a car accident. Whether it was in the form of a personal message for Redway (like Rich Kidd, Kardinal Offishall, Boi-1da, Quake Matthews, Peter Jackson, comedian Trixx), or with retweets/likes (Classified) on one of the countless messages to choose from, it was clear that Redway’s passing had made a quick and large impact on the scene. Several sites observing social media trends even briefly listed “#RIPRedway” as the leading “hashtag” in several regions, including Toronto.

Drake’s two Instagram posts, which reference seeing Redway at OVO Bounce last night, were especially telling of Redway’s level of respect in Toronto and only adds to the wonder of what the young MC had in store for the world. We’ll likely hear new material in the coming weeks and months — producer WondaGurl was especially close to the BLVD rapper — but we’ve been robbed of watching him develop further into an international representative of both the Toronto and Canadian hip-hop scenes. His stock was on the rise and it was only a matter of time until the right doors opened for him.
Gone way too soon. Just saw this guy yesterday at Bounce. RIP Redway.” – Drake
The 2014 Noisey article “Redway: Two Steps Ahead” made it quite clear that he had already garnered the interest of record labels and management companies south of the border. It certainly doesn’t hurt when you have a producer like WondaGurl (Jay Z, Drake) behind the boards from start to finish. She’s been a part of some monumental projects and showed at an early age that she had an ear for music. There’s a reason she got behind Redway – beyond just being an old family friend, she’s spoken quite frequently about her admiration and respect for his talent and hustle.
She was won of the first people to pay homage. Click the jump link below for more tweets and social media posts from members of the hip-hop community. R.I.P. Shane Redway.
